NNS History

The first Newman Chronicle was produced by Antony (Tony) Newman of Canada in October 1986. Tony produced two editions of the Chronicle each year over the next four years

In the October 1991 Chronicle Tony announced th e launching of the Newman Name Society on 1st January 1992 which saw the production of the first NNS Bulletin.

Bulletins were produced biannually in January and July of each year until January 2001. Thereafter the Bulletin ceased production and the Chronicle became a quarterly journal, produced each January, April, July and October. In 2015 production reverted to twice a year.

Founding office holders of the society (from January 1992) included:

  • Anne Cole from England, who became subscription officer for the UK,
  • Louisa Shermerhorn from Canada, who became subscription officer for North America, and who also took on the job of Treasurer, and
  • Sandra Beckett from Australia, who became subscription officer for Australasia, and who produced all the NNS Chronicles between 2004 and 2013.

The July 2000 Bulletin (its final edition) announced the retirement of Tony Newman from the active participation in the society. He produced his last editorial for the Chronicle in the October 2000 edition, but remained a member of the society.
